The Central West Newfoundland Senior Hockey league got off to a great start this past weekend as fans poured into the arenas in Clarenville and Grand Falls-Windsor to catch their teams in action.
Both the Corner Brook Royals and Gander Flyers split their opening series away from home.
The Royals took Saturday’s matchup against the Caribous by a score of 4-1 despite being severely outshot throughout the game. Sunday afternoon’s matchup saw the Caribous team rebound and dump the Royals by a score of 6-2.
Saturday’s opener saw the Royals Brandon Nicholas pick up 2 goals and import Phil Mangnon pick up 3 assists in the win. In Sunday’s game, the Caribous Andrew Sweetland picked up 2 goals and 2 assists for a 4 point afternoon, while teammate Dale Sullivan picked up a goal and 2 assists.
In Grand Falls-Windsor, the defending Herder Champions the Cataracts fell in the first game by a score of 5-2 at the hands of the Gander Flyers.

The Flyers had a pair of goals from Ray Dalton and Jordan Escott picked up 1 goal and 2 assists for the win.
Sunday afternoon’s matchup saw a different Cataracts team take the ice. The defensive squad put in a full 60-minutes as the Cats took a 3-0 win. Michael Brent scored a goal and added an assist in the win.
