Dawson Mercer NHL Draft-Eligible

Dawson Mercer has come a long way from his home in Bay Roberts. As a member of the QMJHL, Roberts finds himself being ranked as a “Grade A” prospect by NHL Central Scouting and with him being draft eligible, the member of the Drummondville Voltigeurs is all business.

The 17 year-old prospect is in his third year with the Drummondville squad and finds himself leading the team’s scoring with 17 points (9G/8A) in just 11 games. His stats were enough to put him in seventh place overall for QMJHL scoring.

Mercer was known more for his play-making ability but this year, he has been finding the back of the net. When asked about his role this season Mercer says “I was always more of a play maker. It was always one of those things I never really had an idea of shooting first. Instead, I was looking to setup a play. Now I like to score.”

With Mercer being eligible for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, he could not have picked a better time to raise his profile by scoring. His performance in previous years in the QMJHL were stellar but for whatever reason, Mercer was one of those players that flew under the radar despite having scored 30 goals and adding 34 assists in last season.

In examining the NHL Central Scouting report on Mercer, the 17 year-old is listed as being 6’0″ and weighing 180 pound left winger. Notes on him indicate he has a strong work ethic and loves it in the corners.

In recent news, Mercer was named to the QMJHL squad that will play against a touring Russian junior team. “Any time you get to play for Canada against Russia in hockey, it’s a special moment … exciting news,” he says, when asked about his upcoming role. “I played in the world U17 challenge in 2017 and that was fun. This will be an hour too.”

Mercer’s star is rising and we can look for more great things from this Newfoundlander in the months and years to come.
