Is St. John’s Getting QMJHL?

There are many rumours going around that St. John’s, Newfoundland is about to get a Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) franchise team. These rumours have been circulating for the last several weeks with St. John’s Sports & Entertainment (STPE) supposedly looking for an anchor client for the Mary Brown’s Centre/Mile One Stadium.

There may be some truth to the rumour as VOCM News reported today that the head coach of the St. John’s Junior Caps head coach, Steve Callahan indicating that a QMJHL franchise is the only franchise that would work in the city.

According to the VOCM story, SPJE and Mary Brown’s Centre are working to secure an anchor tenant. Callahan has indicated when it comes to the “Q”, “It becomes an opportunistic situation, you obviously have to have a franchise that’s in a position that’s not succeeding, and in order to do so, then the numbers have to correlate that way, and does the move make it feasible? “It’s really the only product that’s going to work here,” he explained.

St. John’s lost its professional hockey team last season when the St. John’s Growlers dissolved, leaving the arena without an anchor tenant. To fill the gap left by the Growlers, the Mary Brown’s Centre is turning to the Junior & Senior Caps.

Do you think that St. John’s should have a QMJHL team or do you feel it would be unable to sustain such a franchise?
